Chapter 01: Behind the Scenes

Prologue

Back to the Beginning

I was nine when curiosity carried me beyond the movie and into the special features of Back to the Future: a hidden world of sets, cameras, and stories from behind the screen. I watched everything I could find. Then I discovered the commentary.

The film began again. The clocks ticked. Marty stepped into Doc Brown’s garage. Two unfamiliar voices entered the picture.

It was Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis.

Scene by scene, they revealed the choices, accidents, and imagination behind a world I had always believed in. By the time the DeLorean disappeared into flashes of blue light, movies were no longer simply places I wanted to escape into.

They were places I wanted to create.

Act 1 | Origins

Where It All Began

I grew up on a ranch in the hills of Santa Cruz, where open land left plenty of room for imagination. When the days grew quiet, entertainment meant watching movies, drawing, experimenting, and eventually creating films of my own.

Santa Cruz, famously transformed into Santa Carla in The Lost Boys (1987), was home to a creative community that thrived on artistic expression. That home lead me to where I am today.

Room to Imagine

Growing up on a ranch gave my imagination room to wander. With family camcorders and questionably acquired editing software, I taught myself filmmaking through homemade versions of the movies and television shows I loved.

Creativity With Purpose

At sixteen, I founded Only in Santa Cruz and taught myself Photoshop to build its identity. The debut collection sold out in one weekend, beginning a partnership with Grind Out Hunger and earning me a place on its junior board.

A Path Forged

I entered college as a business major, stepped into the first lecture, and knew I was in the wrong story. I turned around, changed my major to film, and two years later packed my bags for the New York Film Academy in Hollywood.

Stories in a Different Form

After graduating, I found another form of storytelling in marketing. Over six years, that path carried me from Content Creator to National Art Director, shaping ideas through film, design, animation, and strategy.

The Story Continues

Two feature screenplays are becoming novels, allowing their characters and worlds to grow beyond the boundaries of the page. The next chapter has not yet been released, but it is already in production.

Act 02 | Creativity With Purpose

Only in Santa Cruz

At sixteen, I turned a phrase familiar to generations of locals into Only in Santa Cruz, an apparel brand rooted in the place that raised me. I taught myself Photoshop, built its identity from the ground up, and learned how to carry an idea from the screen into the world.

Inspired by Grind Out Hunger, the brand became a way to support children facing hunger in my community. Our debut collection sold out in its first weekend, beginning a partnership that taught me creativity could do more than build a brand. It could serve a purpose.

Act 03 | Debut Short Film

The Fallout

The Fallout was my first short film made with a full crew, a cast of actors, and a location capable of becoming its own world. We filmed among the abandoned military buildings of Fort Ord, transforming its empty streets and weathered structures into a post-apocalyptic landscape.

The production required careful scouting, coordination, and a tightly controlled schedule. Much of that historic setting has since disappeared, leaving the film as both a fictional story and an archive of a place that no longer exists in the same form.

Act 04 | Festival Appearances

Official Selection

A film is shaped through long nights, difficult choices, and the belief that one day it may find an audience. In 2018, The River Styx Motel was selected for the Burbank International Film Festival. For the first time, a story that had lived between script pages, sets, and editing timelines stepped beyond its creators and into a theater of its own.
